Tekirdağ sits on the northern shore of the Sea of Marmara, in the European part of Turkey. From above, the town follows a long crescent of coast. The waterfront is lined with promenades and the harbour, and the streets rise inland in terraces up the slope that frames the bay.
The town has deep literary and historical ties. The poet Namık Kemal was born here, and Francis II Rákóczi, the Hungarian prince, spent his years of exile in Tekirdağ, where a museum now occupies his former house. Many Turks know the town just as well for its köfte, the meatballs that carry its name.
