The town stretches along the coast, with fishing hamlets near the shore, residential streets inland and the East Coast Road running parallel to the sea.
Its life is shaped by that position: fishing communities on the beach, commerce along the main road, and daily links with neighbouring Puducherry for work, education and trade. The boundary between Tamil Nadu and the union territory runs through the area in an irregular line, a reminder of the old French enclaves along this coast.
