Lianyungang lies on the northern coast of Jiangsu, facing the Yellow Sea. It is an important port and the eastern terminus of the rail corridor known as the New Eurasian Land Bridge, which links China's east coast with Central Asia and Europe. On a map the city appears in several parts, separated by hills, farmland and water rather than joined in one dense mass.
Inland, the historic town of Haizhou and the modern centre form one cluster of streets, while the port district lies on the coast to the east, with long piers and basins reaching into the sea. Between them, ranges of hills break up the map, and a long sea dyke connects the mainland with an offshore island.
The best-known of the hills is Huaguo Shan, the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, traditionally identified as the home of the Monkey King from the classic novel Journey to the West.
