The region sits on the edge of the desert, and the map shows how settlement here depends on water. Straight roads, rectangular blocks and farmland are all arranged along irrigation channels.
The Yinchuan plain has been irrigated from the Yellow River for more than two thousand years, and its canal network is among the oldest in China.
