Linhe lies on the flat plain of northern Ningxia, a short distance east of Yinchuan and close to the Yellow River. From above, the landscape is organised by water. Long, straight irrigation channels run through farmland divided into rectangles, and the town sits inside this geometric patchwork. Roads follow the same logic, so the map reads as a set of clean, parallel lines interrupted only by the river's broad curves.
The Ningxia plain has been irrigated from the Yellow River for centuries, and you can see that in almost every line of the drawing. Canals and ditches run beside roads and field boundaries, making a pattern that is quiet but precise.
