Long Beach, New York, occupies part of a barrier island on the South Shore of Long Island, in Nassau County. From above it is a narrow strip of land held between the Atlantic Ocean to the south and Reynolds Channel to the north, with a regular grid of streets filling the space in between.
The city was developed in the early twentieth century by William H. Reynolds, and its boardwalk along the ocean remains its best-known feature, running for more than two miles parallel to the beach. Perpendicular streets run from the channel to the sand, so almost every block ends at water on one side or the other.
