Lord Howe Island lies in the Tasman Sea, several hundred kilometres east of the New South Wales coast, and from above it is a thin, curving crescent. Inside the curve is a shallow lagoon enclosed by a coral reef, often described as the southernmost coral reef in the world. At the southern end, Mount Lidgbird and Mount Gower rise abruptly from the sea and hold most of the island's height.
The small settlement lies around the lagoon in the lower middle part of the island, with a handful of roads, an airstrip and houses scattered among the trees. Most visitors get around by bicycle or on foot. The northern end is hilly and green, with small beaches and bays, and the east coast faces the open ocean.
The island group was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, and the number of tourists allowed at any one time is limited, which keeps it quiet. A little over 20 kilometres to the southeast, the narrow volcanic spire of Ball's Pyramid rises from the sea. The island's highest summit rises steeply at the southern end beside Mount Lidgbird. Together they pack the contour lines into a dense, dark mass against the sea.
The airstrip
The airstrip runs almost from coast to coast across the narrow middle of the island. It is a straight line cutting through the curve of the crescent.
