Luoyu is a town in the Longnan area of southern Gansu, a region of steep mountains and narrow valleys at the western end of the Qinling ranges. Like most settlements here, it follows the valley floor, so its map is long rather than round. Streets run parallel to the watercourse, and building stops where the slopes begin to climb.
Around the town the land folds into ridges and gullies, and farmland is worked into terraces wherever the ground allows. On a black-and-white map this makes a striking composition: a compact band of streets in the centre, a winding river line, and roads that follow the valleys to reach neighbouring towns and villages.
