Mazarrón lies on the coast of the Region of Murcia, and its map has two main centres. The historic town sits a few kilometres inland, with compact streets around the church and town hall. On the coast, Puerto de Mazarrón has grown around its harbour, with streets following the bays and headlands. Between them, roads cross dry, hilly land with greenhouses and farms.
The area has a long mining history, especially for lead, silver and alum, and old workings still mark the hills. Two Phoenician shipwrecks were discovered off the coast, among the oldest of their kind found in the western Mediterranean. Near Bolnuevo, wind and water have carved the soft sandstone into unusual shapes known as the Erosions of Bolnuevo.
