Mie sits in the hill country of southern Oita Prefecture, on Kyushu, and since 2005 has been part of the city of Bungo-Ono. From above it is not a compact grid. Small settlements follow the valley floors, roads trace the low ground between wooded slopes, and the built area thins quickly into fields and forest. Only a few straight lines stand out on the map, and most of them are roads or railway.
The JR Hohi Main Line runs through the area, linking Oita on the coast with Kumamoto across the island, and Bungo-Mie Station gives the town a clear point on the map. Around it, streets gather into a denser cluster before loosening again along the rivers. The contrast between that small core and the wide, lightly drawn land around it is what gives the plan its quiet character.
A Mie map poster works mostly through negative space. Short roads branch off the main routes, follow a slope for a while and stop. Watercourses cut long, irregular curves through the fields, and the scattered hamlets show up as small knots of lines. In black and white the drawing looks almost like a botanical study of a stem and its branches, which suits a place defined more by its landscape than its buildings.

Outside the centre, roads follow river valleys and the edges of fields, so the pattern reads as branching lines separated by wide open spaces rather than as blocks.
