Monreale sits on the slopes of Monte Caputo, looking down over Palermo and the wide valley once called the Conca d'Oro. The old town is a tangle of steep, narrow streets that climb and turn with the hillside, and from above it looks dense and irregular, quite unlike the flat grid of the city below.
At its centre is the cathedral founded in the twelfth century by the Norman king William II. Its interior is covered in golden mosaics, and its cloister, with carved paired columns, is one of the finest in Sicily. The cathedral is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site for Arab-Norman Palermo and the cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale.
