Mooi River takes its name from the river that curls along its edge. The Dutch-Afrikaans name means beautiful river, and the view from above bears it out. On a map the town is compact: a modest set of residential streets gathered close to the water, with the railway line and the N3 highway running past on their way between Durban and the interior.
Around the town, the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands open out into rolling farmland. The district is known for dairy farming and thoroughbred horse studs.
