Mudu lies in Wuzhong District on the western side of Suzhou, between the city and the eastern shore of Lake Tai. The map shows the classic pattern of a Jiangnan water town. Narrow canals run through the old centre, lined by lanes and crossed by small bridges. To the west the land rises into a group of wooded hills, and beyond them lies the open expanse of the lake.
Mudu has a history of more than two thousand years, and tradition links it to the ancient state of Wu. Lingyan Hill, just north of the town, is crowned by a Buddhist temple and has long been a pilgrimage and sightseeing site. The old town also keeps classical private gardens, and its canal streets remain a popular draw for visitors from Suzhou.

The wooded hill north of the town breaks the flat plain with an open, unbuilt area. It is topped by a long-established Buddhist temple.

West of the hills, the land runs down to Lake Tai. The lake's wide shoreline gives the wider map a calm, open edge.
