Narok is the main town of Narok County in southwestern Kenya, set in the highland country of the Rift Valley region. For many travellers it is the last sizeable town on the road to the Maasai Mara, and on the map that role is easy to see. The main highway passes through the centre, and other roads branch off toward the reserve and the surrounding areas.
A small river runs through the town, and the streets in the centre cluster on both sides of it. Beyond this core, residential areas and plots spread out over gently rolling land, and the road network quickly thins into tracks. The town is also the commercial centre for the wider Maasai area, serving farming and pastoral communities throughout the county.
