Neu Wulmstorf lies in the district of Harburg in Lower Saxony, directly on the southwestern border of the city of Hamburg. From above, its residential streets fill the space between the flat marshland toward the Elbe in the north and the wooded Harburg hills in the south. A federal road and the railway line to Stade cross the municipality from east to west.
The municipality grew rapidly in the second half of the twentieth century as families moved out from Hamburg. Much of its map is made up of the curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs typical of that era. The S-Bahn links it closely to the city, and several older village centres belong to the municipality. The fruit-growing area of the Altes Land lies a short distance to the north.
