Nguru lies in the north-west of Yobe State, near the border with Niger, on the flat, dry plains of the Nigerian Sahel. On a map the town appears as a compact settlement of sandy streets and household compounds with wide open land around it. Its layout is simple: a few main roads, a market area and residential quarters spreading outward.
What makes Nguru distinctive is its position at the edge of the Hadejia-Nguru wetlands, a seasonal floodplain formed by the Hadejia and Jama'are rivers. These wetlands, with lakes and channels that expand after the rains, are an important refuge for migratory birds and support fishing and farming in an otherwise arid region.
Nguru was also the terminus of a railway branch line from Kano, built during the colonial period to carry agricultural produce.
