Nikolayevsk-on-Amure lies on the left bank of the Amur River in Russia's Khabarovsk Krai, near the point where the river opens into the Amur Liman and the Sea of Okhotsk. On a map, the river dominates everything. It is extremely wide here, and the town runs along its shore in a long band of streets, with port areas at the water's edge and forested hills rising behind.
The town was founded in 1850 by the naval officer Gennady Nevelskoy, one of the first Russian outposts at the Amur mouth, and for a time it was the main Russian port on the Pacific coast. It was almost entirely destroyed in 1920 during the Civil War and later rebuilt, and it remains an important base for fishing and river shipping.
