Niscemi is a town in the province of Caltanissetta in southern Sicily. It sits on high ground at the edge of a plateau, overlooking the plain of Gela and the coast beyond. The town's southern side falls away steeply, so the map ends abruptly on that side, while the other directions open more gently onto farmland.
The historic centre is a compact grid of streets around several churches and squares, rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake that struck much of south-eastern Sicily. Newer neighbourhoods extend onto the plateau behind it. Near the town lies the Sughereta di Niscemi, a protected cork oak woodland that is one of the rare remaining forests in this part of the island.
