Northam lies in the Limpopo province of South Africa, on the western limb of the Bushveld Complex, one of the richest platinum-bearing geological formations in the world. The town grew in close connection with mining, and its map shows it: straight residential streets, service roads and industrial sites set in open bushveld, with the landscape stretching away flat and dry around it.
The name Northam is widely associated with the platinum mine that operates nearby and with the company that runs it. Much of the surrounding land is given over to mining, farms and game areas, so the town itself appears as a concentrated cluster in an otherwise sparse landscape, connected by long roads to neighbouring towns in the region.
