Novokazalinsk, officially renamed Ayteke Bi, is a town in Kyzylorda Region in south-western Kazakhstan. It grew around a station on the railway between Orenburg and Tashkent, built in the early twentieth century, and the line remains the strongest feature on the map. Streets are laid out in a regular grid alongside the tracks, with the station area as the organising point.
The surrounding land is flat, arid steppe in the lower valley of the Syr Darya, which flows not far from the town towards the remains of the Aral Sea. Irrigation canals and small fields near the river add thin lines to the otherwise open land, while the town itself sits as a neat rectangle of streets.
The older settlement of Kazalinsk lies nearby, closer to the river, and the two names reflect the shift from river fort to railway town. A Novokazalinsk map poster shows a place defined by clear geometry and wide spaces, where a single line of track explains why the town is there at all.
