Nyeri sits in the central highlands of Kenya, on high ground between the Aberdare Range to the west and Mount Kenya to the east. From above, the town is less a grid than a set of roads that follow the ridgelines, with streams cutting shallow valleys between them. The commercial centre forms where these routes meet, and the lines thin out quickly into smallholdings and farm tracks.
The surrounding county is known for coffee and tea, and the fields come close to town. On a map they show as a fine mesh of lanes and footpaths across the hillsides, very different from the tight blocks of the centre. A Nyeri map poster records that change, from market streets to the looser weave of the farmland that feeds them.
Nyeri also has a place in scouting history. Robert Baden-Powell, who founded the movement, spent his last years here and is buried in the town. For visitors it is a gateway to the Aberdare and Mount Kenya national parks. Beyond the centre, a dense net of small lanes serves coffee and tea smallholdings. Drawn in fine lines, it surrounds the town with a texture that looks almost like fabric.
