Ostend faces the North Sea along a long, almost perfectly straight coastline, and that line sets the tone of the whole map. A continuous promenade runs on top of the sea wall, and behind it the town packs into dense blocks. To the east, the harbour channel cuts deep inland, lined with docks and basins that split the town from its eastern districts.
Inland, the water continues. The Bruges–Ostend canal comes in from the southeast, and the Spuikom, a large rectangular saltwater basin once used for oyster farming, sits just beyond the harbour. Parks such as the Leopoldpark break up the grid near the centre, and the coastal tram line follows the shore in both directions, linking Ostend to the rest of the Belgian coast.
Ostend was a favourite seaside resort of the Belgian royal family in the nineteenth century, and the painter James Ensor spent almost all of his life here. The port cuts southeast from the sea into a series of docks and basins, clearly dividing the old town from the districts on the eastern side of the water.
