Pandeglang is the administrative seat of the regency of the same name in Banten, at the western end of Java. The town lies inland on raised ground at the foot of volcanic mountains. On a map it appears as a compact centre with a handful of roads leading away into the surrounding countryside, toward villages, plantations and the coast further west.
Terrain decides the layout. Streets follow the gentler ground, and the town thins out quickly where the slopes steepen and fields and gardens take over.
