Paosha is a town in southern Gansu Province, in the mountainous region where the Loess Plateau meets the ranges that lead towards Sichuan. The terrain is steep and deeply folded, and settlements here usually occupy the narrow strips of flatter land along rivers. On a map, the town appears as a compact, elongated cluster of streets.
Its shape is dictated by the valley: the main road and the river run side by side, and most streets branch from them for only a short distance before the ground rises. Outside the town, small villages and farm terraces are scattered along side valleys, connected by roads that twist around the slopes.
