Parole is an unincorporated community in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, just west of Annapolis. Its name comes from the Civil War: Camp Parole was set up here to hold Union soldiers released on parole while they waited to be formally exchanged. Today the name refers to a busy suburban area, not a camp.
From above, Parole is defined by its roads. Several major routes converge at the western edge of Annapolis, and the large parcels of the Annapolis Mall and other retail sit between them. Away from the commercial core, the map changes to curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs, with wooded strips following the creeks down toward the South River.

The Annapolis Mall and nearby shopping centres occupy large, simple blocks. On the map they appear as broad open shapes, surrounded by ring roads and parking areas.

Residential streets wind between wooded stream valleys that drain toward the South River. The result is a pattern of loops and dead ends that is typical of Chesapeake suburbs.
