Petershagen lies in the far northeast of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the Minden-Lübbecke district, where the Weser leaves the hills behind and winds across open lowland. The municipality is large and loosely knit. It is a string of villages on both banks of the river rather than one dense centre, so fields, lanes and water dominate the map.
The historic core sits beside the Weser, where the prince-bishops of Minden once kept a residence, and the castle still stands by the river. Around it the old town is small and compact. Further out, sand and gravel extraction has left a series of lakes in the floodplain, and their sharp-edged shapes are a distinctive feature of this stretch of the valley.

Castle by the river
The former residence of the Minden bishops stands at the edge of the old town, right on the Weser bank. It is a small but telling marker of the town's long role as a seat of church power.
