Pfungstadt lies in southern Hesse, a few kilometres southwest of Darmstadt, on the flat plain of the Upper Rhine. Its old centre is a compact knot of irregular streets around the church. Later residential districts are laid out in more regular patterns, and the whole town is bordered by fields, orchards and forest.
The Modau stream runs through the town toward the Rhine, and the A5 and A67 autobahns pass close by. Their long straight lines and interchange loops form a strong frame on the map. To the east the land rises toward the Bergstraße and the Odenwald hills, while to the west it stays flat all the way to the Rhine.
The town is best known for the Pfungstädter brewery, which has brewed beer here since the nineteenth century. A Pfungstadt map poster shows the place as a neat, self-contained town on the plain, with its historic core, newer quarters and surrounding woodland all clearly legible.
