Princeton's campus sits on the south side of Nassau Street, the main street of a small New Jersey town, and runs downhill in layers toward the water. From above, the northern edge is tight and historic, anchored by Nassau Hall. The southern half opens into athletic fields and then into the thin, elongated shape of Lake Carnegie, with the canal running beside it.
Chartered in 1746 as the College of New Jersey, the university settled in Princeton in 1756, and in 1783 the Continental Congress briefly met in Nassau Hall. Collegiate Gothic buildings added in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries form enclosed courtyards and arches. On the map these show as irregular clusters rather than a strict grid.

Lake Carnegie
This long, narrow lake was created in the early twentieth century for rowing. It forms the southern boundary of the campus and is one of the most distinctive shapes on the poster.
Delaware and Raritan Canal
The historic canal and its towpath run alongside the lake and trace a straight, quiet line along the southern part of the map, framing the campus from below.
