Qiaotou lies in the mountainous south of Gansu province, a region of deep valleys and steep ridges far from the dry plains of the north. In country like this, towns grow where the valley floor is wide enough, and the map shows exactly that: a long, narrow strip of streets following the river, with hills rising close on both sides.
The name Qiaotou means bridgehead, and places with this name usually grew near a river crossing. On the map, the river and the road running beside it are the backbone of the town, with short side streets climbing a little way up the slopes before the terrain takes over.
A Qiaotou map poster is shaped by the land more than by planning. The result is an elongated, flowing composition, very different from the grids of Chinese plains cities. For people with roots in this part of Gansu, it shows the familiar feeling of a town held between mountains.
