Rāiganj is the headquarters of Uttar Dinajpur district in northern West Bengal. The town grew along the Kulik River and the national highway that links southern Bengal with the hills and plains further north. On a map the centre forms a dense cluster of streets near the river, with neighbourhoods spreading out among fields and ponds.
Just outside the town lies the Raiganj Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as the Kulik Bird Sanctuary, which shelters one of the largest heronries in Asia. Each monsoon, thousands of migratory birds, especially Asian openbill storks, nest in the trees along the river, making the sanctuary one of the best-known features of the district.
