Rangpur lies in the north of Bangladesh, on the broad alluvial plain crossed by the Teesta and the rivers that feed the Jamuna. The land is almost perfectly flat, so the city has grown outward without hills or a coastline to hold it back. From above, a tight commercial centre gives way to looser neighbourhoods, with rectangular ponds and tree-lined plots scattered between the roads.
Main roads run out from the centre towards the neighbouring districts, and a railway line crosses the town, adding one firm straight stroke to an otherwise organic street pattern. Water appears everywhere at a small scale: tanks, ditches and a narrow river channel wind through the built-up area. In black and white, these small shapes give the map a texture quite different from the dense grids of larger South Asian cities.
Rangpur is the administrative centre of its own division and a long-established college town, home to Carmichael College, one of the oldest colleges in the region. On its edge stands Tajhat Palace, a former zamindar residence that is now a museum.
