Remuera lies east of central Auckland, on high ground between the city's volcanic cones and the inner harbour. Its main road runs along a ridge, and the streets leading off it fall away on both sides in long, curving lines. The northern slopes reach down towards Hobson Bay and the edge of the Waitematā Harbour.
The volcanic cone of Ōhinerau, also known as Mount Hobson, rises inside the suburb. On the map it appears as a rounded open space that the surrounding streets bend around. Remuera is known for its established homes, generous gardens and tree-lined roads, and much of the housing dates from the early twentieth century.
