Rio Tinto lies in the Mamanguape valley in the state of Paraíba, in northeastern Brazil, a short distance inland from the Atlantic coast. The town was founded in the early twentieth century by the Lundgren family as the site of a large textile mill, and its layout still reflects that origin.
Workers' houses were built in long, regular rows near the factory, with streets arranged around the industrial complex. After the mill declined the town kept its unusual form, and its company-town architecture is now recognised as part of Paraíba's industrial heritage. Lush vegetation and the river valley surround the settlement.
