Rorainópolis lies in southern Roraima, Brazil's northernmost state, a short distance above the equator. It grew along BR-174, the highway linking Manaus with Boa Vista, and the map still shows that origin. The road runs straight through, and the town unfolds on either side of it like a planned settlement laid onto the forest.
The streets form a regular grid of wide blocks, typical of towns founded through settlement programmes in the Brazilian Amazon. At the edges, the grid gives way to long, narrow clearings of farm lots running back from side roads. This herringbone pattern is one of the most recognisable shapes of the region from above.
