Rotenburg, often called Rotenburg an der Wümme to distinguish it from other towns of the same name, lies in northern Lower Saxony between Bremen and Hamburg. The Wümme river winds through the area in slow loops. From above, the river’s course and the green meadows alongside it separate parts of the town and give the map a strong natural thread.
The surrounding landscape is flat, with the farmland, woods, moorland and heath typical of the North German plain. The railway between Bremen and Hamburg passes through the town, and main roads lead out in several directions. Rotenburg is also known for large healthcare and social institutions, including a major hospital and the Rotenburger Werke, which give it regional importance beyond its size.
