Ryl’sk is a small town in the west of Kursk Oblast, on the banks of the Seym river. It is one of the oldest towns in Russia, first mentioned in the chronicles in the twelfth century. On a map its streets spread over higher ground above the river, while the valley floor below stays open, crossed by channels, oxbows and meadows.
The town centre keeps a regular structure of streets and squares, with churches and the Saint Nicholas monastery marking its historic core. Away from the centre the pattern loosens into streets of single-storey houses with gardens, which then give way to fields. The river follows a winding course along one side of the town, and its bends are the most distinctive feature of the map.
