Sāgar lies in Shivamogga district in the Malnad region of Karnataka, on the rainy eastern side of the Western Ghats. From above the town is a compact centre ringed by green. The roads wind among low forested hills, areca plantations and paddy fields, and small tanks and streams catch the heavy monsoon rain.
The area has a long regional history. Keladi and Ikkeri, both nearby, were seats of the Keladi Nayakas, who ruled this part of the coast and hills in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Sāgar is also a common base for visiting Jog Falls, where the Sharavathi River drops over the edge of the Ghats.
A Sāgar map poster shows a town that has grown in step with its landscape. The dense grid of the centre gives way quickly to curving rural roads, and the terrain leaves irregular open spaces all around. The effect is intimate and green, very different from the flat plains of the Deccan.

Winding roads lead out through forested slopes and areca gardens, following the terrain rather than a grid and giving the map its soft, curving character.
Tanks and streams
Monsoon-fed water bodies and small watercourses appear throughout the area, adding scattered organic shapes typical of the Malnad landscape.
