Saint-Michel-de-Chaillol lies in the Champsaur, the broad upper valley of the Drac in the Hautes-Alpes. The village sits on the sunny side of the valley, above the farmland of the valley floor, and its territory rises toward the mountains at the edge of the Écrins National Park. On a map the commune looks like a long ramp, starting in cultivated ground and ending in steep, empty terrain.
Higher up is the ski station known as Chaillol 1600, a modest resort favoured by families and by skiers who prefer small, unhurried areas. Its buildings form a tight cluster, and from there the lifts and pistes head uphill in thin, straight strokes. Lower down, lanes connect scattered hamlets, while torrents cut shallow lines down the slope toward the Drac.
