From above, the town is a modest, fairly regular grid of blocks, typical of Cuban provincial towns, with a central square and streets running out to the surrounding fields.

It runs past the built-up area and links it to Santiago and the wider eastern network, a reminder of how closely towns like this were tied to the sugar economy.
