San Mateo Huitzilzingo lies in the municipality of Chalco, on the level ground in the southeastern part of the Valley of Mexico. From above, the town forms a tight, mostly rectangular grid of streets and small lots, with a few longer roads connecting it to neighbouring communities and to the wider metropolitan area.
The land here was once part of the basin of the former Lake Chalco, which helps explain the remarkable flatness of the surrounding terrain.
