Schoten lies just northeast of Antwerp, where the city's suburbs meet the woods and heath of the Kempen. Its map is defined by water: the Albert Canal passes along the southern edge, and the Dessel–Schoten Canal runs through the municipality to join it. Between these straight lines, residential streets fill the land in a close, irregular pattern typical of Flemish towns.
Green space is a strong feature too. The park around Schoten Castle, with its ponds and old trees, and the wooded Vordenstein park form large open areas on the map, and further woodland lies toward the north.
