Skien grew up along the Skienselva, the river that links the large lake Norsjø to the fjord at Porsgrunn. On a map, the river runs through the middle of town and splits it into banks that are joined by several bridges. The centre is compact and sits on slightly raised ground, while residential streets climb the wooded hills on either side.
At Skien the river meets the Telemark Canal, a chain of lakes, rivers and old stone locks that runs far inland. The first locks sit right beside the town, so boats heading up the canal pass through Skien at the start of the route. This link between the town and the waterway gives the map its main line: a river that is also a staircase.
Skien is the birthplace of Henrik Ibsen, born here in 1828. A museum at his family's later home, Venstøp, sits just outside town. A Skien map poster shows the town between lake and fjord, with the river holding the composition together and a mix of steep and level streets on each bank.

The locks at the start of the Telemark Canal lie beside the town. On the map they are a short run of narrow channels where the river climbs toward Norsjø.

Residential streets curve up the slopes around the centre and follow the contours instead of a grid. The result is a band of soft, looping lines around the town.
