Springfield sits in Clark County, in west-central Ohio, between Dayton and Columbus. From above, its downtown is a firm grid of blocks, with the historic National Road, now US 40, running east to west through the middle. Buck Creek winds across the north side of the centre, and the Mad River runs to the west, both adding soft curves to the geometry.
Known as the Champion City, a name tied to the farm machinery once made here, Springfield grew as an industrial town in the nineteenth century. Its hilltop campus of Wittenberg University is a clear landmark on the map, and the city also holds the Westcott House, a Prairie-style home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
