Squamish lies at the northern end of Howe Sound in British Columbia, on the Sea-to-Sky Highway between Vancouver and Whistler. The town takes its name from the Squamish Nation, whose traditional territory includes this area. Above it rises the Stawamus Chief, a huge granite dome that draws rock climbers from around the world, and the surrounding mountains have made Squamish a centre for outdoor sport.
Water and rock shape the map more than planning does. The Squamish River and its tributaries spread across a flat delta, and the estuary fans out into the sound in a web of channels. Downtown occupies a peninsula near the water, while neighbourhoods stretch north along the valley floor. Highway 99 runs along the base of the cliffs, the only practical route through.
