Stebnyk lies in Lviv Oblast, in the gently rising foothills of the Ukrainian Carpathians, close to both Drohobych and the spa town of Truskavets. On a map it is a compact town with an irregular street pattern, surrounded by fields, small streams and roads that link it with its larger neighbours.
The town's history is tied to salt and potash, which have been extracted here for a long time, and its mining works shaped its growth in the twentieth century. The landscape around the old workings is marked by the industry. Around it, the neighbouring towns and the forests of the foothills fill the wider view.
