Šumperk is in northern Moravia, in the valley of the Desná where it opens toward the lowlands, and it is often called the gateway to the Jeseníky mountains. From above, the town has a clear historic core: an oval of dense blocks that walls once enclosed. Later quarters surround it and climb gently toward the forested hills.
Broad streets and green strips now follow the line of the old fortifications. The grand nineteenth-century buildings along them earned the town the nickname little Vienna. On a Šumperk map poster this ring reads clearly as a band around the centre, separating the medieval street plan from the looser grid of the industrial-era town.
The town is also remembered for the witch trials of the late seventeenth century, which killed dozens of people in the region and are commemorated today. Beyond the centre, railway lines, factory sites from the textile era and housing estates fill the valley floor. Roads head north into the mountains toward the spa towns and ski resorts of the Jeseníky.

Streets and green space laid out along the line of the former walls wrap around the centre. Grand nineteenth-century buildings line them, following the Viennese model.
Desná valley
The river and the railway follow the valley floor, with hills rising on either side. The town stretches in one direction as a result, which gives the print a natural axis.
