Swellendam lies in the Western Cape of South Africa, at the foot of the Langeberg mountains, on the N2 between Cape Town and the Garden Route. The town is stretched along a long main road that follows the base of the range, and from above its plan is shaped by the mountains to the north and open farmland toward the Breede River to the south.
Founded in 1745 under the Dutch East India Company, Swellendam is often described as the third-oldest town in South Africa. The Drostdy, built as the seat of the local magistrate, survives as a museum, and many older houses in the Cape Dutch style still line the streets, giving the centre a distinctly historic character.
Just south of town, Bontebok National Park protects a stretch of fynbos along the Breede River. A Swellendam map poster brings together the linear town, the mountain edge and the open land beyond, a composition that feels spacious and well balanced, with the Langeberg acting as a natural frame.
