Tabatinga lies on the northern bank of the Solimões, as the Amazon is known in this part of Brazil, at the point where Brazil, Colombia and Peru meet. On the map, the most striking thing is that there is no visible break between Tabatinga and the Colombian town of Leticia next to it. The street grids simply continue into each other across the border.
The river forms the southern edge of the town and is its main connection to the outside world. Boats run downstream towards Manaus, and across the water lie river islands and the Peruvian settlement of Santa Rosa. Tabatinga's airport sits within the town, its runway one of the few long straight lines in a landscape otherwise bounded by forest.
