Tama lies in the western suburbs of Tokyo, and its map is nothing like the dense, tangled pattern of the city centre. Most of the municipality was shaped by Tama New Town, one of Japan's largest planned residential developments, begun in the 1960s to house a growing capital. Roads sweep along the contours of the Tama Hills, and housing estates sit on terraced blocks between wooded slopes.
The planners separated people from traffic, so footpaths and pedestrian bridges form a second network laid over the roads, linking stations, schools and parks. Tama Center, the commercial hub, is home to Sanrio Puroland, the indoor theme park of Hello Kitty. To the north, the older district around Seiseki-Sakuragaoka sits close to the Tama River, where the land flattens toward the plain.
