This Taoyuan lies in the far north of Jiangsu, on the low, flat plain that stretches across the Huai River basin. It should not be confused with other places of the same name elsewhere in China. From above, the landscape is almost entirely level. Roads run straight for long distances, and the town appears as a compact cluster where several of them meet.
Water shapes the land here even where there is no large river in view. Drainage ditches and irrigation channels cut the countryside into rectangles, and ponds dot the spaces between villages. The built-up area follows the same logic, with streets that mostly meet at right angles, flanked by low blocks. Beyond them the field pattern begins almost at once.
A Taoyuan map poster captures that geometry of the northern Jiangsu plain: the town at the centre, the ruled farm roads leading away from it, and the fine lines of channels threading between plots.
